Flexible foam in your mattress and rigid foam in your refrigerator wall are both polyurethane — same basic chemistry, wildly different materials. Understanding what separates them is the key to specifying the right raw materials, because the difference is built into the polyol, the isocyanate and the additive package.
What makes a foam flexible or rigid?
It comes down to crosslink density — how tightly the polymer network is tied together. A loosely crosslinked, open-cell network bends and recovers, giving flexible foam. A tightly crosslinked, closed-cell network resists deformation, giving rigid foam. The raw materials you choose set that crosslink density.
Flexible foam
Flexible foam is built mainly on polyether polyols of higher molecular weight and lower functionality, reacted with TDI. Its open-cell structure makes it soft, breathable and resilient.

Rigid foam
Rigid foam uses lower molecular weight, higher functionality polyols reacted with polymeric MDI. Its dense, closed-cell structure traps gas and resists heat flow, which is what makes it such an effective insulator.

- Key traits: rigidity, low thermal conductivity, structural strength
The role of additives
Additives shape the difference too. Silicone surfactants tuned for rigid systems create the fine closed cells that insulation needs, while flexible-foam surfactants favour an open structure. Catalyst packages and blowing agents are likewise matched to each foam type.
