Polyurethane / 03

MDI — Diphenylmethane Diisocyanate.

Monomeric, polymeric and prepolymer MDI — the isocyanate of choice for rigid foam, insulation, footwear and CASE applications.

Diphenylmethane Diisocyanate (MDI) is the second major isocyanate of the polyurethane world. Compared with TDI it has higher functionality and lower vapour pressure, which makes it the preferred choice for rigid foam, insulation and many coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers (CASE). Creston Chem supplies all three commercial forms.

Monomeric MDI

Pure 4,4′-MDI used where precision and high performance matter — elastomers, fibres and specialty applications requiring controlled, high-strength bonding.

Polymeric MDI (PMDI)

A higher-functionality blend that is the standard for rigid foam. It delivers excellent thermal insulation and good flow, and is widely used in insulation panels and spray foam.

  • High thermal insulation performance
  • Good flow and processing for rigid systems
  • Cost-effective for large-volume rigid foam

Prepolymer MDI

MDI modified to extend pot life and improve workability, used in adhesives, sealants, elastomers and footwear systems.

Applications

  • Rigid foam & insulation — building panels, refrigeration, appliances, spray foam
  • CASE — coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers
  • Footwear — sole systems and prepolymers
  • Binders — wood panels and composite boards

MDI vs TDI

Choose MDI for rigid foam, insulation and durable CASE applications; choose TDI for soft, flexible foam. The two are not interchangeable, and the right pick depends on the product you are making and the polyol it is paired with.

Handling & storage

MDI is moisture-sensitive and reacts with water, so containers must be kept sealed and dry. Handle with appropriate PPE per the MSDS, and store in cool, dry conditions. Documentation is provided with every shipment.

Packaging

Supplied in drums, IBCs and ISO tanks depending on grade and volume.
