At its heart, polyurethane is the reaction of a polyol (an alcohol with multiple reactive –OH groups) with a diisocyanate (TDI or MDI). Catalysts control the speed of that reaction, surfactants shape the foam’s cell structure, and blowing agents expand it. Change any one input and you change the firmness, density, resilience or rigidity of the finished material.
