TDI — Toluene Diisocyanate.

An aromatic isocyanate supplied as TDI 80/20, the reactivity workhorse behind high-volume flexible slabstock and moulded polyurethane foam.

Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) is an aromatic diisocyanate and one of the two workhorse isocyanates of the polyurethane industry. It is supplied most commonly as TDI 80/20 — a blend of 80% 2,4-TDI and 20% 2,6-TDI — which offers the reactivity profile that flexible foam producers rely on.

What is TDI 80/20?

The 80/20 ratio refers to the two isomers in the blend. This balance reacts readily with polyether polyols, making it ideal for high-volume flexible foam where consistent, predictable rise and cure are essential. Creston Chem supplies industrial-grade TDI 80/20 with consistent purity for large-scale manufacturing.

Why TDI for flexible foam

  • Excellent reactivity with polyether polyols
  • Suited to continuous, high-volume foam production
  • Well established in flexible slabstock and moulded foam

Applications

  • Flexible slabstock foam — mattresses, furniture cushioning, packaging
  • Moulded foam — automotive seating, headrests, armrests
  • Select CASE uses — certain coatings, adhesives and elastomers

TDI vs MDI

TDI is the standard choice for soft, flexible foam; MDI is generally preferred for rigid foam and many CASE applications because of its higher functionality and lower volatility. Many production lines use both. For a fuller comparison, see our guide on TDI vs MDI, or explore our MDI range.

Handling & safety

TDI is a hazardous material and a respiratory sensitiser. It must be handled in well-ventilated areas using appropriate PPE, with strict moisture exclusion and adherence to the MSDS. Store in cool, dry, sealed conditions away from water and incompatible materials. Our team can provide the relevant safety documentation with every shipment.

Packaging

Supplied in sealed steel drums (typically 250 kg) and ISO tanks for bulk requirements.
